Nice to meet you!
Who We Are
The Residence Athletic Association (RAA) is a volunteer, student-run organization serving residence students at the University of Calgary. We are a collection of passionate and motivated individuals who have made it our mission to make living a healthy, active lifestyle fun and accessible!
Why We're Here
To make living a healthy, active lifestyle fun and accessible for residence students at the University of Calgary.
What We Do
The short of it is, we run athletic programming! We have three main initiatives:
- Weeklies make up the core of our programming. We run these casual, drop-in events every week as a fun and easy way to stay active on the regular. These free activities are open to all levels of skill and athleticism!
- Special events happen a few times per semester. These events give us an opportunity to run tournament-style events or introduce unique sports to residents that wouldn't be feasible on a weekly basis. Our flagship special event, the RAAmazing Race, happens in April and is an 'Amazing Race' style event where residents compete in teams for some RAAwesome prizes.
- We also partner with Active Living to make organized sports more accessible for residence students. RAA manages teams in select sports within the University's intramural program. Because we pay the team rate, we are able to offer spots to residence students at a significantly lower cost than if they were to sign-up through Active Living directly - we're talking 2-3x cheaper!
Our people are our strength
Without our members, RAA wouldn't exist. That's why we invest in our people and encourage them to learn and grow! We have implemented a best-in-class development and training program that enables our members to succeed in their role with RAA and gives them the transferable skills employers are looking for in the real world.
Development at RAA
To kick-start our member's development, we created a best-in-class development and culture training program. Our focus is to give our members the tools they need to improve their communication and leadership skills, as well as enhance their ability to work with others. We engaged the world-class People and Culture leaders at WestJet, a Calgary-based airline, to help inform our approach.
One of our top priorities at RAA is ensuring everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow. We empower members at every level of the organization to take initiative and make things happen! Our members take ownership of their projects and are backed by the guidance of a leadership team that cares. We are an organization that cares; we are inclusive of people from all walks of life and encourage learning!
